Features of this piece
Deep within the white glaze, several dark bands stand upright. They are iron from oniita, showing its colour beneath the feldspar glaze, with red-brown bleeding at their edges. They appear the way a line of trees does beyond the mist — outlines never quite settling.
The glaze lies thick as fallen snow, and fine crazing runs through it in many lines. Under light from the side, the surface returns a soft, gentle relief.
Where the glaze ends, the Mogusa clay is left bare, the border rising and falling with the ridges of the body. The rim is drawn toward a square, and the interior is white alone; at its centre the tea settles quietly. From this way of placing iron beneath white glaze came the National Treasure “Unohanagaki”.

Shino
The moment of change
Shino is an elusive vessel that was created for only a brief period in the tea world over 450 years ago. It was fired in large kilns and anagama kilns from the late 16th century to the early 17th century. The charm of Shino lies in its characteristic appearance of a snow-white surface, created by using feldspar, with a subtle, warm fire color visible within it. Bringing out this beautiful color is extremely difficult due to the need for strong reduction firing, where the kiln temperature does not easily rise, necessitating constant temperature adjustments day and night. The kiln firing lasts for more than seven days, conducted under extremely harsh conditions, requiring careful attention. The outcome varies significantly with the seasons and climate, demanding a level of delicacy that allows for no moment of inattention. The color of Shino leaves an impression like "the soil seen after the snow melts" or "a beautiful sunset formed by clouds and the setting sun." Capturing and expressing the fleeting natural beauty without any preconceived ideas or intentions, Shino continues to captivate people's hearts, both now and in the past.
Rest for the heart Shino
In today's busy world, it's often difficult to find time to relax. It's important to pause and take time for yourself amidst the hectic daily routine. Why not create moments to enjoy tea or a meal? Shino ware is made from natural clay, and because of its coarse particles, it is said that the "vessel breathes." This is why the entire vessel feels so alive. Its warm touch and gentle feel when it touches your lips provide comfort and help to relieve daily stress. Each piece is carefully crafted with heart by the ceramic artist Kato Takaya to enrich your heart even a little. Enjoy a moment of relaxation and forget the busyness of modern life with Shino ware.
