Features of the Work

**"墨華 (Bokka)" – The Profound Beauty of Setoguro, Born from Oniita**

Ink-like hues seep and spread across the surface, evoking the delicate fluidity of brushstrokes on paper. Within this quiet expanse, one can sense the essence of resilient flowers taking root in the earth, blooming with unyielding strength. The intricate *kairagi* texture, formed during firing, adds depth to the serene landscape, etching a profound expression into the chawan.

The unique properties of Mogusa clay, which endure rapid cooling, merge with the traditional technique of removing the piece from the kiln post-firing. This process gives rise to the distinctive deep black of Setoguro. The natural flow of glaze and the unpredictable effects of kiln transformation ensure that no two pieces are alike.

Kato Takaya, the artist behind this creation, embraces the interplay of chance and intention, striving to capture the harmony between nature and human craftsmanship.

A chawan that embodies the profound depth of Setoguro, where ink-like hues gently permeate its surface.

Setoguro

One from one kiln

Setoguro is renowned for its captivating, deep black color. Achieving this beautiful black involves using a glaze made from Oniita (iron-rich clay) mixed with ash. The piece is fired at high temperatures and then removed from the kiln while still hot, followed by rapid cooling—a technique known as "hikidashi-guro." This process was employed over 500 years ago and produced the elusive "Setoguro" ware for only about 30 years in the world of tea. In the tea ceremony, Setoguro is revered for its unique aesthetic value within the Japanese principles of wabi-sabi. By extracting the piece from a kiln over 1,100 degrees Celsius and cooling it quickly, the piece transforms into a deep black while producing beautiful cracking sounds (kan-nyu) as it cools. Only up to three pieces can be fired in one kiln at a time, and achieving a satisfying black is extremely challenging. It is said that getting one satisfactory piece from a single kiln firing is considered a success.

Rest for the heart - Setoguro

In today's busy world, it's often difficult to find time to relax. It's important to pause and take time for yourself amidst the hectic daily routine. Why not create moments to enjoy tea or a meal? Shino ware is made from natural clay, and because of its coarse particles, it is said that the "vessel breathes." This is why the entire vessel feels so alive. Its warm touch and gentle feel when it touches your lips provide comfort and help to relieve daily stress. Each piece is carefully crafted with heart by the ceramic artist Kato Takaya to enrich your heart even a little. Enjoy a moment of relaxation and forget the busyness of modern life with Shino ware.
