Features of the Work

A Shino Mizusashi that Reflects the Timeless Strength of Nature

Exposed to rain yet standing firm, the surface of weathered rock tells a story of time—eroded, carved, and shaped into a profound and rugged beauty. This Shino Mizusashi captures that essence, portraying an imagined landscape of resilience. The powerful texture, reminiscent of rock faces shaped over centuries, is masterfully expressed through Mogusa clay, carrying the scent of damp earth and the silence of time.

While inheriting the refined techniques and aesthetics cultivated through generations, this Mizusashi introduces a bold presence into the world of tea. More than just an object to grace the tea ceremony, it deeply resonates with those who use it. It serves as a quiet reminder of the enduring strength found in nature—unshaken, unwavering, and profoundly still.

Shino

The moment of change

Shino is an elusive vessel that was created for only a brief period in the tea world over 500 years ago. It was fired in large kilns and anagama kilns from the late 16th century to the early 17th century. The charm of Shino lies in its characteristic appearance of a snow-white surface, created by using feldspar, with a subtle, warm fire color visible within it. Bringing out this beautiful color is extremely difficult due to the need for strong reduction firing, where the kiln temperature does not easily rise, necessitating constant temperature adjustments day and night. The kiln firing lasts for more than seven days, conducted under extremely harsh conditions, requiring careful attention. The outcome varies significantly with the seasons and climate, demanding a level of delicacy that allows for no moment of inattention. The color of Shino leaves an impression like "the soil seen after the snow melts" or "a beautiful sunset formed by clouds and the setting sun." Capturing and expressing the fleeting natural beauty without any preconceived ideas or intentions, Shino continues to captivate people's hearts, both now and in the past.

Rest for the heart Shino

In today's busy world, it's often difficult to find time to relax. It's important to pause and take time for yourself amidst the hectic daily routine. Why not create moments to enjoy tea or a meal? Shino ware is made from natural clay, and because of its coarse particles, it is said that the "vessel breathes." This is why the entire vessel feels so alive. Its warm touch and gentle feel when it touches your lips provide comfort and help to relieve daily stress. Each piece is carefully crafted with heart by the ceramic artist Kato Takaya to enrich your heart even a little. Enjoy a moment of relaxation and forget the busyness of modern life with Shino ware.
