The Setoguro chawan is distinguished by its unique texture, highlighting the rare glaze made from Oniita (iron-rich clay). It features a smooth, moist feel, characterized by its glossy surface and a pleasant grip that feels as if it adheres to your hand. The tactile experience of holding this chawan is one of comfort and familiarity, making it a delightful piece to use.
Crafted using techniques from approximately 500 years ago, this Setoguro chawan (matcha bowl) captures the essence of moss illuminated by moonlight. The beautiful green of the moss in Japanese gardens changes its hue under the moonlight, creating a unique and captivating scene. While moss is often admired during the day, it takes on a different, equally enchanting beauty at night under the moonlight. This piece allows you to enjoy the serene ambiance of a nighttime garden while preparing matcha. It masterfully represents the green of moss illuminated within the deep black glaze.
Compared to typical matcha bowls, this chawan is lightweight and slightly smaller, making it easy to use for beginners, women, and the elderly. Enjoy the tranquility and elegance of a moonlit garden with this exceptional piece.

Setoguro

One from one kiln

Setoguro is renowned for its captivating, deep black color. Achieving this beautiful black involves using a glaze made from Oniita (iron-rich clay) mixed with ash. The piece is fired at high temperatures and then removed from the kiln while still hot, followed by rapid cooling—a technique known as "hikidashi-guro." This process was employed over 500 years ago and produced the elusive "Setoguro" ware for only about 30 years in the world of tea. In the tea ceremony, Setoguro is revered for its unique aesthetic value within the Japanese principles of wabi-sabi. By extracting the piece from a kiln over 1,100 degrees Celsius and cooling it quickly, the piece transforms into a deep black while producing beautiful cracking sounds (kan-nyu) as it cools. Only up to three pieces can be fired in one kiln at a time, and achieving a satisfying black is extremely challenging. It is said that getting one satisfactory piece from a single kiln firing is considered a success.

Rest for the heart - Setoguro

In today's busy world, it's often difficult to find time to relax. It's important to pause and take time for yourself amidst the hectic daily routine. Why not create moments to enjoy tea or a meal? Shino ware is made from natural clay, and because of its coarse particles, it is said that the "vessel breathes." This is why the entire vessel feels so alive. Its warm touch and gentle feel when it touches your lips provide comfort and help to relieve daily stress. Each piece is carefully crafted with heart by the ceramic artist Kato Takaya to enrich your heart even a little. Enjoy a moment of relaxation and forget the busyness of modern life with Shino ware.
